Why WOFF2 speeds up your site
Fonts are often among the largest files on a page, and text can't render in your chosen font until they load. WOFF2 files are typically 30–50% smaller than the original TTF, which improves Largest Contentful Paint — a Core Web Vitals metric that affects Google rankings. Pair it with font-display: swap (already in the generated CSS) so text shows immediately in a fallback font while the web font loads.
How it works
WOFF and WOFF2 are containers: they compress the tables inside a TTF or OTF without changing the glyphs. This tool builds WOFF using the browser's built-in zlib compression and WOFF2 using Google's reference encoder compiled to WebAssembly — the same code used to produce Google Fonts. Everything runs locally; your font files are never uploaded.
Self-hosting fonts: a checklist
- Confirm your licence permits web embedding.
- Convert only the weights you actually use (e.g. 400 and 700) — each weight is a separate download.
- Preload the most important font:

Frequently asked questions
Which font format should I use on my website?
WOFF2. Every modern browser supports it, and it's typically 30% or more smaller than WOFF. Add WOFF as a fallback only if you must support very old browsers.
Does converting change how the font looks?
No. WOFF and WOFF2 are compressed wrappers around the same font data, so glyphs, kerning and hinting are preserved. Unpacking a WOFF2 gives you back the original TTF or OTF.
Can I convert TTF to OTF, or OTF to TTF?
Not here. TTF and OTF use different curve types (quadratic vs. cubic outlines), so converting between them redraws every glyph and can subtly change the design. For the web you don't need to: both convert to WOFF2.
Am I allowed to convert a font?
Check the font's licence. Many desktop licences don't cover web use. Open-source fonts, such as those on Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License, can be converted and self-hosted freely.
