How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Choose your PDF.
- Pick a number style β
1,Page 1,Page 1 of 10or1 / 10. - Click where on the page the numbers should go: any corner, or centred at the top or bottom.
- Optionally change the font size, distance from the edge and starting number, or skip the cover page.
- Click Add page numbers & download.
When page numbers matter
- Legal and government submissions: affidavits, court filings, tender documents and RTI replies are often required to be page-numbered, sometimes as βPage X of Yβ so missing pages are obvious.
- Theses and project reports: universities usually expect numbered pages, often without a number on the title page.
- Merged documents: after combining scans, numbering makes the bundle easy to reference.
- Printing: numbered pages are easy to put back in order.
Tips
- Cover page: tick βDon't number the first pageβ. With the start number at 1, your second page shows 1; set it to 2 if you want the cover counted.
- Binding: for documents that will be stapled or bound on the left, bottom-centre or bottom-right placement keeps numbers away from the binding.
- Distance from edge: 28 pt is about 1 cm. Increase it if your printer cuts off the edges.

Frequently asked questions
Can I skip numbering the cover page?
Yes. Tick "Don't number the first page" and numbering begins on page 2. Combine it with "Start numbering at" to control the first number shown.
Can I start from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set "Start numbering at" to any number β useful when your PDF is one chapter or part of a larger document.
Will numbers appear correctly on landscape pages?
Yes. The tool detects rotated pages and places the numbers upright at the chosen edge as you'd see the page.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Page numbers are added in your browser, and the file never leaves your device.
