Why accountants learn Tally shortcuts
Tally is built for the keyboard. Experienced accountants rarely touch the mouse: they open vouchers with function keys, jump between reports with Alt+G, and save with Ctrl+A. Knowing these keys is expected in most accounts and bookkeeping interviews, and makes daily data entry dramatically faster.
Voucher keys at a glance
| Key | Voucher | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| F4 | Contra | Cash deposited in or withdrawn from bank, bank-to-bank transfers |
| F5 | Payment | Money paid out — rent, suppliers, expenses |
| F6 | Receipt | Money received from customers or others |
| F7 | Journal | Adjustments, depreciation, provisions |
| F8 | Sales | Sales invoices |
| F9 | Purchase | Purchase bills |
| Ctrl+F8 | Credit Note | Sales returns or discounts after invoicing |
| Ctrl+F9 | Debit Note | Purchase returns |
Getting around TallyPrime
TallyPrime replaced Tally.ERP 9's nested menus with Go To (Alt+G): type any report name — Balance Sheet, Day Book, Stock Summary, GSTR-1 — and it opens. Switch To (Ctrl+G) moves between open reports. Company tasks live under Alt+K and backups under Alt+Y.
Tips
- Shortcut hints appear on the right-hand button bar of every screen — check it when you're unsure.
- Use Alt+C to create a missing ledger or item right from the voucher, without leaving it.
- Take regular backups with Alt+Y before year-end or major changes.
